UNOSDP Youth Leadership Programme: Empowering the Future of Sport for Development

around the world countless youth dedicate their efforts to address important issues through sport a universal language that everyone can understand they work passionately to develop their communities and become trusted and respected role models most of them only have limited access to education and training opportunities and carry out their initiatives with very little resources I know many many projects around the world where young people with no income and sometimes when they get up they don't know what they will eat when they come back home at night and they work for the children for the youth in sports many times in football book as well and other sports and I want to together with my office and different partners all around the world to foster this kind of wonderful role models to help these young people become the leaders of tomorrow the UN OSTP created the youth leadership program a forum where young people can learn and exchange the best practices in the field of sport for development so that they made progress professionally the first youth leadership camp took place in Doha in January 2012 since then each edition of the program has gathered around 30 young people for two weeks of training more than half of them are women with the level of female participation growing with each new camp by July of 2015 we have run 17 camps in 8 different countries around the world with over 500 alumni through practical and theoretical sessions play based activities and group discussions young leaders learn to use sports to address the most pressing social issues and advance inclusion gender equality healthy lifestyles and peace I've learned how to use of different sports expecially if you don't have the equipment and resources how to be creative and how to come up with new ideas to reach out to these children and how to teach them the different life skills and how to use them apart of sports and in life I believe knowledge is power and once I give the person are the youth in my community that knowledge they will become powerful and they will use it to the best of my ability the best I can be and become great in sports and other avenues I want to be that agent of changing in my country to help people do what they want to do which is that is changing have a better country community we are proud of this powerful initiative and thank our partners for assigning facilitators developing education sessions and providing operational health visibly dojaquez left by our city and by the multi-sport event it has a positive we see this is a perfect opportunity to enable young people to develop their leadership skills through team sport and make a contribution to their communities and the global society we will continue inspiring more youth around the world to join their efforts in building a better future through sport within the framework of the post-2015 development agenda you
