Gymnastics- Sydney Weekender

What do you think of when you hear the word
gym, well if you’re me you think of treadmills, weights and rowing machines, but if you’re a kid and it’s school holidays,
you think of Sydney Olympic Park. Here at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre,
gym is all about gymnastics and that means bars, beams and everything in between for the school holiday classes coming up. It also means instructors like Gabby who not
only talks the talk but bounces the bounce. Basically they learn balance, coordination
and strength, flexibility and not only do they take it from this sport but they can
put it into other sports that they might play. So many things to do, world class equipment,
word class teachers? Yes. Well these world class students have to start
somewhere and kids can begin taking classes as young as 18 months. Up, up, up, up, up, up up, down, down, down,
down.down. Just because they’re little doesn’t mean there’s
no skill involved, whether it’s swatting balloons, seems like
we’ve got a bit of a tennis player in our midst, or catching feathers. You ready to catch this? What colour’s this?
Pink, pink Yay. Once they’ve got a few things down pat in
the regular pre-school classes they can move into the mini gym school holiday class, sure they’ll still start with the parachute
but pretty soon they’re on to some basic gymnastics. This is called motor bike, so you bend your
knees, stick your bottom out and a big Y at the end. There’s a bit of bouncing, now you do motor
bike, oh, bend those knees, stop, bend those knees, beautiful, that wasn’t very graceful, and a bit of rolling, oh, how do you make
it up the hill again, whoa. Then all the skills come together in the obstacle
course, which is easy for some, than for others. Everything’s creaking, When the kids get older and get a few more
skills, they can move up to gym fun and this bunch are way more serious from the get go. You’re joking aren’t you? No I’m blaming the equipment. I need chalk that will make everything so
much better. A bit of chalk and a bit of expert help and
I’m soon Monkey walking with the rest of them. That’s it, well, sort of. So whether we’re doing hand stands, crab walks
or try to get a little plastic ball through the hoop, we’ve all got our eyes on one activity. Tarzan, watch out. The kids classes here are a lot more fun than
my visits to the gym, but don’t under estimate the work out. Your kids will bend over backwards to join
the Gymnastic classes at Sydney Olympic Park. For all the info call 9763 0111 and this is just one of the Kids in the Park school
holiday activities. Check them all out at sydneyolympicpark.com.au
